It is known for years that welding is a special process when it comes to the control of its quality. This is because the final result may not be capable of being verified by testing. The quality of the weld is to be manufactured into the product, not inspected. On top of that, the most typical features of the European Directives, adopted on the basis of the New Approach, are: the definition of mandatory essential requirements and the load on the Manufacturers shoulders of the full responsibility of designing and performing a product, bound to be placed on the Community market. This means again that welding should require continuous control and/or that specified procedures are to be followed.
