Effect of additional elements into stainless steel to brazing-ability of stainless steel

Recently, lots kinds of stainless steel were used for engineering field. So that joining technology for new type stainless steel will be needed. On the other hand, joining-ability of conventional stainless steel such as austenitic stainless steel, SUS304 (JIS), had been investigated. It is necessary to investigate brazing-ability of new type stainless steel by observation of cross-sectional microstructure at the brazed joint and mechanical properties. In this study, one of the special stainless steel, SUS315J series (JIS), was employed as base metal. This one contained Cr, Ni, Si, Cu and Mo. So small additional effect of Si, Cu and Mo to stainless steel was investigated by comparison with brazing-ability of conventional stainless steel. Brazing-ability of SUS315J series (JIS) was investigated by spreading test. According to this test results, excellent spreading-ability of molten nickel-based brazing filler metal on SUS315J series (JIS) was obtained as compared with that on SUS316L (JIS). It appeared that copper element, which was contained in SUS315J series (JIS), influenced dramatically spreading-ability of filler. On next step, observation of cross-section, analysis at the brazed joint with EPMA will be done. And mechanical properties will be measured by using single lap specimen.
