Response to 'the challenge to UK drug policy' by Professor Neil McKeganey

In his article 'The Challenge to UK Drug Policy' published in this edition of Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy, Professor McKeganey considers the findings from three reports, including one by Professor Peter Reuter and Alex Stevens that was published by the UK Drug Policy Commission (UKDPC). In doing so, Professor McKeganey incorrectly ascribes the views of the authors of that report to the UKDPC (Reuter & Stevens, 2007). Moreover, in a number of places, he moves beyond what is contained in the reports to speculate and imply that we are calling for a major change in the direction of drug policy the natural corollary of which would be a shift towards legalization.
