New strategies for alcohol policy-lessons from history?

Recently, a report on the role of temperance in history and its relationship to current and future alcohol policy was published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. (Berridge, 2005) As the report's author, I surveyed the history and also interviewed a range of players in alcohol policy today. The report covers many issues, from politics to women, but it also has something to say about the 'health lobby' on alcohol and possible future strategic alliances. It argues that coalitions that operated in the past are again on the agenda and deserve discussion in the present.
