Royal College of General Practitioners Certificate in Drug Misuse

Through a grant obtained from the Department of Health (England), the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) has developed, delivered and accredited a Certificate in the Management of Drug Misuse aimed at general practitioners (GPs) with special clinical interest (GPWSI) in drug misuse. This is the first accredited postgraduate qualification from the RCGP. The Certificate is a five-day training programme, delivered over four to six months, using a variety of teaching methods (including didactic lecture-based training and small group Master Classes led by experienced GPs). Four hundred and seventy doctors (including fifty-four prison doctors) began the course, and three hundred and seventy were awarded the Certificate. All places were filled within weeks of advertizing the course (with a further one hundred and twenty placed on a waiting list), indicating that it met a real need among these doctors for drug-misuse training. This report describes the format, structure, assessment criteria and candidate characteristics of the first cohort of doctors undertaking the training.
