Code of Conduct on Ethics and Equity Issues to be Addressed by CGIAR: Competing International Fora on Genetic Resources Complicate Policymaking

The development of a sound, ethical basis for the genetic resources work of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) in its relationships with farmers, communities, private companies, and national and international agencies will be the focus of an upcoming workshop in Brazil next April (see p.43). The sponsors and organizers: CGIAR, Swiss Development Corporation, SIDA (Sweden), USAID, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Environment-Brazil, IPGRI, and Universi-dade Federal de Goias are planning the event--"Ethics and Equity in the CGIAR's Use of Genetic Resources for Sustainable Food Security"--with the goal of develop-to the delegates attending the CGIAR International Centers Week deliberations inWashington last fall, IPGRI Director General Geoffrey Hawtin introduced the committee's draft of Guiding Principles for the CGIAR Centers on Intellectual Property Protection and Genetic Resources which builds upon previous statements on IPP endorsed by the CGIAR in 1994 and 1995. The guidelines were based on an extensive internal and external consultative process that included not only the CGIAR centers as well as their Boards of Directors, but also experts in the private sector and the NGO community (see next page).
