Variable speed drive (VSD) technology has now advanced to the point where it stands to make even modest manufacturing systems truly intelligent and energy efficient. Guy Kennett of Mitsubishi Electric takes up the story: VSDs have been used in factories, the HVAC and the water industries, and by designers of pump, fan and conveying systems, for many years. While the food manufacturing industries have used drives since their inception, there are still many machines and processes that would benefit from an upgrade to variable speed capabilities. Drives control the speed of motors and the equipment to which they are attached. Normally a motor will run at one speed, and a drive varies the mains frequency before it is fed into the motor, making it turn at different speeds.
