摘要

A young mother faced quite a challenge. Her son was overweight and just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. One thing their doctor recommended was increasing the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables in his diet. Yet, finding places in their neighborhood to purchase these foods was not easy, and what little they did find was expensive and not the best quality. This experience motivated the young mother, like many others in this country, to become a "food citizen"-someone who begins learning about where good food-food that is fresh, healthy, affordable, and sustainably produced-comes from, how to connect with local farmers, and how to join others in transforming a local food environment.
