Specification of requirements - a way of bringing new slurry spreading technique into use

The Swedish Delegation for Sustainable Technology conducted the project "Environmentally Friendly Slurry Spreaders" from 1998 to 2000. The aim of the project was, on a voluntary basis, to stimulate the manufacturers of slurry spreaders to develop new types of spreaders that give the users better possibilities to utilise the slurry's nutrient, thereby reducing the environmental impact of slurry spreading. The aim was also to influence the farmers to buy these new spreaders and encourage them to askfor more developed spreading techniques in the future. The central part of the project was a specification of requirements that pointed out the direction of development and set limits on requirements of the slurry spreader's function. Seven manufacturers/suppliers sold 25 slurry spreaders/spreading systems that fulfilled the requirements within the frame of the project. An evaluation of the project showed that the project reached the overall aim in bringing new spreading technique in use. The project also increased the farmers' demand on more developed technique for slurry spreading, and consequently, the project has a long-term effect. However, for a full effect of the project the authority should have a longer mandate than the one that the Delegationhad.
