An Analysis of the Attitudes of Food Plants Administrations in Jordan Toward the Adoption of Quality Management Systems

The study aimed at measuring and analyzing the attitudes of food factories in Jordan toward the adoption of quality management systems in the Jordanian food industry, and the relationships among factories characteristics and their attitudes. Data werecollected from a sample of 80 food factories that have more than 20 workers, using a 5-point Likert-type measure of 26 items. Cronbach alpha coefficient was found to be 0.92, which indicated the internal consistency of the study scale. Parametric and non-parametric tests were used depending on the results of normality and homogeneity tests. The results show that food factories had relatively low tendency to adopt quality management systems, but factories with ISO 9000 certification were found to have higher scores on the attitude scale. Factories with no ISO certification were found to emphasize the technical and production aspects, without giving due attention for capacity-building and human resource development, which indicates weak quality culture.Corporate factories with larger capital and ISO certification, which face increasing demand and have exports activities, which have research and development activities and those using computer in administration or production, were found to be more likely to have significantly higher attitude scores. The findings have important policy implications, in particular regarding training in the field of statistical quality and process control, employee empowerment, and providing technical and financial supportto factories interested in ISO certification. Creating competitive environment in the field of quality improvement, and organizing seminars and workshops contribute to the promotion of quality culture.
