Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is more frequent in chronically HIV-infected patients. There is no animal model to study PAH associated with HIV. Nonhuman primates infected with SIV (simian homolog of HIV), orwithchimeric virions (SIV/HIV, orSHIV), closely recapitulate HIV infection, immunodeficiency, and pulmonary arteriopathy seen in humanswithPAH.Herewe discuss the pros, cons, and promises in the emerging field focused on long-term complications of HIV infection.
