Following the construction of the transcontinental railroad in the 1860s, AMC's Hell on Wheels conveys the period and locations with effects from FuseFX. While the show's production built replicas of the trains and laid down track to support tight shots and moments when the train wasn't moving, almost all of the shots showing wider perspectives and moving trains were achieved with CG models of trains and railroad tracks composited into live-action backgrounds. For work on the CG trains, FuseFX developed a custom rig that allowed artists to quickly put the train and tracks into shots. All of the parts of the train would then automatically move and animate and update as the speed and position of the train were dialed in.
