A significant part of conventional solvent borne alkyd resins used in decorative coatings will be reformulated into high solids alkyds. Resins are dissolved in much lower levels of hydrocarbon solvents. Apart from reformulation challenges, a clear draw-back of the high solids approach is the loss of control of dry film thickness. Also, with the lower solvent levels and higher poly-mer content of the formulated coating, formulation cost is increased proportionally.
