The pursuit of happiness appears in the American constitution. Which just goes to show just how sacred this concept is to us. Still, the results of annual surveys over the past fifty years in the United States on the topic "Are you happy?", are becoming worrying. Or even utterly depressing. They show that, in the land of plenty, there is a sharp decline in joie de vivre, despite the fact that the standard of living has tripled. If this is true, can we continue to hold up the "American way of life" as our economic and cultural model?
