Marked decrease of serum Ca 125 levels after Denver shunt placement in a patient with cirrhosis and refractory ascites.

Increased serum CA 125 levels can be associated with chronic liver disease, and particularly with liver cirrhosis [1-4]. In addition, a relationship has recently been described between CA 125 and the amount of ascites and a significant decrease of CA 125 after large-volume paracentesis or liver transplantation in patients with decompensated cirrhosis.However, in reviewing the English literature, we found no reports or studies showing the course of serum CA 125 levels after the placement of a peritoneovenous surgical shunt. We report a case of a marked decrease of high serum CA 125 levels after Denver shunt placement in a patient with liver cirrhosis complicated by refractory ascites.
