Mango: emerging tropical export crop

In 2001 over 25.1 million tonnes (t) of mango were produced from about 90 countries. Asia was the main producer with 76.9 percent of the total world production, followed by the Americas with 13.8 percent, Africa with 9 percent, and less than 1 percent each for Europe and Oceania (Table 1). The North American Mango Market is growing very fast with an increase in imports of around 40 percent between 1996 and 2000. This increase in supply, however, has lead to a slight drop in price. Mexico, the leading global exporter, is by far the main supplie followed by Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Haiti and Guatemala (table 4).
