A 2006 inquiry into OH&S regulation of these industries, led by Neil Pope, prompted the changes that bring the resources sector into line with other Victorian industries, ensuring consistent and independent regulation. Victoria's earth resources sector has sharply reduced the incidence of workplace injuries in the last seven years. After a transition period, the VWA will formally take on regulatory responsibility for the resources sector under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 and the Dangerous Goods Act 1985 in January 2008. Victoria's former Minister for Energy Industries and Resources, Theo Theophanous, said the change to the regulation of OH&S in Victoria came "at a time when Victoria's earth resource industries are growing strongly. These arrangements will allow DPI to direct its resources to the increasingly important areas of environmental regulation and community engagement."
