Certification of death and emergency medicine [?rztliche leichenschau und notarztdienst]

The main purpose of the post mortem examination, which is often referred to as the last service to the patient, is the determination of death beyond any doubt. This is regulated by public law of the different states of Germany. The main legal aspects considering access of private property, official discretion as well as the authorisation and obligation of the post mortem and its performance will be clarified in this course. Additionally the medical and legal differences between natural and unnatural cause of death, the consequences for the medical practitioner and the possibilities to avoid mistakes will be discussed.
