Wood Adhesive for Bonding Fire-retardant Treated Timber

Wood and wood composites used in public places are frequendy treated with fire retardant chemicals, with boron compounds much favoured. Conventional waterborne wood adhesives stabilised by polyVOH are prone to gelation when contacted with borate salts, producing a weak bond at the interface. Here it is claimed that dextrin may be used as a suitable stabilising colloid to prepare polyVA and poly(VA-co-E) dispersions suitable as formulating bases for wood adhesives.
