Comparison of determinate and indeterminate types of sesame for oil content and fatty acid composition

The oil content and fatty acid composition of determinate and indeterminate genotypes of sesame, grown in 1998 and 1999 at Antalya, Turkey, were determined by gas chromatography. A total of 10 genotypes, consisting of 6 determinate (selected from the mutagenized population of Muganli and Camdibi) and 4 indeterminate (2 were isolated from the F3 population of dt-45 x Muganli and 2 were the wild types of the determinate mutants Muganli and Camdibi) genotypes, were evaluated. Determinate genotypes hadlower seed and oil yields, but better fatty acid composition (i.e. higher oleic acid and stearic acid and lower linoleic acid contents), than indeterminate genotypes. The oil content of determinate genotypes, whose average approximates that of their respective wild types and sibs, can be improved through selection for higher seed yield.
