During the hot summer months, the primary reason on-high-way trucks idle is to keep the driver cool. Yet the same electrical circuit that is designed to ensure the air conditioning compressor operates is often the same circuit used to power the vehicle's hotel load, putting a strain on the alternator and battery that can burn out the compressor clutch and shut down the AC. "A Class 8 tractor isn't just a driver's workplace, it's his home," said Norman Baker, manager of aftermarket sales for Red Dot Corp., a manufacturer of climate control systems and replacement parts for on- and off-highway equipment. "Drivers want coffeemakers, microwave ovens, televisions, hair dryers, laptop computers - you name it. They also want to stay cool, so they're running the air conditioner while they're popping popcorn and watching a movie.
