Refuse trucks make thousands of stops-and-starts on their routes everyday. This is the perfect duty cycle for hybrid-electric and hydraulic hybrid technologies. Hybrid refuse trucks can yield 30 to 50% reductions in fuel consumption with a corresponding reduction in emissions, including carbon dioxide. Regenerative braking, a key feature of both technologies, can reduce brake wear - leading to lower maintenance costs. However, which is best? And what are advantages and disadvantages of each? Answers to some of these questions are the goal of a new demonstration program being conducted by CALSTART's Hybrid Truck Users Forum (HTUF) Refuse Truck Working Group. The project is aimed at quantifying and comparing the benefits of the two technologies when installed on Class 7 and 8 heavy-duty trucks while used in actual refuse pickup duty.
