Modern turbocharged marine diesel engines typically convert about 50% of the supplied fuel into propulsive power. Another 25% or so goes to powering shipboard auxiliary systems. After the exhaust gases exit the turbocharger, they still contain considerable energy in the form of heat. Several waste heat recovery (WHR) systems have been developed to convert this energy into electrical power, extending the reach of the fuel's power These WHR systems have been, or are now being, installed on ships to recover and use this previously wasted energy.
