Power Shopping in New York City - Kings Plaza mall opts for Deutz-based cogeneration plant

When Kings Plaza Shopping Center opened its doors on September 11,1970, it was a state-of-the-art, high end regional shopping destination for the people of Brooklyn, New York City and beyond. What Kings Plaza also had that day was fairly unique for a commercial real estate development - its own cogeneration plant. What the owners of the facility call the Total Energy Plant (TEP) is located on the upper floor near its parking structure. With a Macy's and an Alexander's as its two "anchor" department stores in 1970, over the years the 139 350 m{sup}2 King's Plaza has undergone several renovations and many changes in mall tenants (although the Macy's store remains to this day). One of the most recent and significant upgrades was to replace the aging cogeneration machinery with a new Deutz gas engine-based power plant.
