Chinese West-East Gas Pipeline Nears Completion - Gas begins flowing across nine provinces transported by 3862 km, USD8.5 billion pipeline

One of the world's largest gas pipeline compression contracts is nearing completion and is set to provide a further shot in the arm for the booming Chinese economy. By the end of 2005, the 3862 km, USD8.5 billion, West-East China Gas Pipeline Project (WEPP) will take 12 billion m3 a year of natural gas across nine provinces from the Tarim basin in the west Gobi desert along a route to the ever-expanding city of Shanghai with numerous take-off points along the way. The 560 000 km{sup}2 Tarim basin is estimated to have 20 years worth of gas reserves.
