High efficiency and larger capacity are always desired qualities of large turbochargers for diesel engines. The high efficiency of the turbocharger can decrease thermal load and improve thermal efficiency of the engine, whereas larger capacity can minimize the size of turbocharger - thus beneficial from both a cost and space perspective. To achieve this two-pronged goal, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, decided to make necessary design modifications on its MET-type turbochargers, i.e., the turbine blades, gas inlet and gas outlet casing were changed in order to improve turbocharger efficiency and turbine capacity. The mechanical strength of previous designs, that have been proven by excellent service experiences, have been verified and compared with new design.
