German-based piston manufacturer KS Kolbenschmidt has developed a new mono-block steel piston designed to reduce the combustion temperature and NO_x formation. The piston is constructed by two forgings that are friction welded to each other. The design consists of a cooling chamber integrated in the piston crown and a cavity closed off from the crankcase that cools down the central crown zone.
