One hails from Oxford, the other from Wolfsburg, and both chase similar customers: motorists who want quality and style with practical compact convenience. The all-new, reinvented MINI Clubman goes head-to-head with the stalwart of the class, the Volkswagen Golf. Hooray for symmetry. Lack of it was one aspect of the previous MINI Clubman that earned it the most criticism. The quirky arrangement of doors, with one on the nearside, two on the offside and a pair at the back, handicapped its popularity, and has been abandoned for the latest Clubman. So here we have a car that is both bigger and now has six doors - two on either side, and a back pair - which makes it much more practical than its frankly rather bizarre predecessor. But what we want to discover is how the new MINI Clubman shapes up to a key rival within the same price bracket - the well-regarded Volkswagen Golf - which are interestingly sized within a couple of millimetres of each other.
