Martek Launches Portable Gas Detectors: Portable gas detectors meet the needs of upcoming IMO monitoring requirements

Martek Marine has introduced the Marine Quattro and Marine Extreme portable gas detectors ahead of IMO's upcoming requirements for gas monitoring. Scheduled to become official on Jan. 1, 2012, amendments to SOLAS 1974 require ship owners to use both fixed and portable hydrocarbon gas detection systems onboard all new oil tankers of 20 000 dwt. The carriage requirements for portable instruments to measure oxygen in tankers are included in the regulation for both new and existing tankers.
