Functional hearing involves activities such as sounddetection, recognition, localization, and speech perception,which typically occur in noise and depend on binauralhearing [1]. Like many agencies, the RCMP currently usesthe audiogram to classify hearing [2]; however, itsrelationship to functional hearing ability is limited [2-3].RCMP would therefore like to establish new, scientifically-based, hearing criteria founded on a complete functionalhearing assessment – a lengthy process involving theconsideration of numerous work-related aspects [3].
