Hebei Province plans to form two steel giants with annual capacity of 10mln tons on the current base of Hangang and Tanggang. Hebei government has submitted the appliance to National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), disclosed by official of Hebei province on August 16, just one day later after the foundation of Anben Steel Group. Hebei Province has become the largest steel province of the nation with steel output ranking first for consecutive five years. In 2004, Hebei province produced 56.4lmln tons of crude steel, accounting for 20.71 percent of the national total and the steel output is expected to reach 60mln tons in 2005. However, the steel markers are small-scaled and scattered In Hebei. Statistics said that Hebei has 202 steel makers while only Tanggang and Hangang have over 6mln tpy annual capacity. Meanwhile, the irrational products mix and energy and environmental crisis are severe obstacles as well for Hebei steel industry.
