Shougang Group, an eight million-tpy steelmaker located on the outskirts of Beijing, is expected to receive approval soon on its proposed move out of the capital to Caifeidian in Tangshan, some 400 km east of Beijing, the company said. The enterprise has submitted the application to the National Development and Reform Commission last year, and we expect that the State Council will give its nod to our plan soon, said a spokesman. He said that Tangshan Iron & Steel Group in Tangshan may cooperate with Shougang in its new worksite construction and future production. The enterprise would like to join hands with local steel producers in development, he said. Beijing Times, a Beijing local newspaper, reported that Shougang will move all its steeimaking plants out of Shijingshan to a new 20 square km worksite in Caifeidian, a port in the western part of Bohai Bay. within five years of State Council's approval. The company will transfer production to the new site in stages - the first two million tonnes in 2005. another two million tonnes by 2007, and the remaining four million tonnes by 2010. Overall company output is expected to be unaffected, the company said.
