Cytomorphological spectrum of amoebic liver abscess in an uncommon case, clinically masquerading as malignancy.

摘要

Amoebiasis is an infection of the human gastrointestinal tract caused by Entamoeba histolytica, which is one of the most prevalent intestinal protozoa in the developing countries. This infection has become more significant due to globalization and increasing number of cases with immunosuppression. It can present with intestinal and extraintestinal manifestations. At times, the clinical presentation can masquerade as malignancy. Identification of the parasite at various sites of infection can lead to a timely treatment and in obviating a major surgery. It has been mentioned that the disease may easily go undetected, unless careful screening is performed with clear concepts of the morphological characteristics of cysts and tropho-zoites of E. histolytica.
