Detached ciliary tufts in amniotic fluid mistaken for parasites.

Dear Dr. Bedrossian: Detached ciliary tufts (DCT) can be found in fluid specimens from both the respiratory tract where they are typically associated with viral infection and in the female genital tract where they are associated with physiologic changes. DCT are unique in that they can be motile on wet mount preparations. This finding can mimic the appearance of a parasitic organism and cause diagnostic confusion to observers not aware of this entity. To our knowledge, we report the first case of DCT present in the amniotic fluid of a young woman with a coincident uterine anatomic anomaly.
