The influence of reservoirs on the flood-regime / a case study of the river alpenrhein

As part of a risk analysis for the fiver Alpenrhein the influence of reservoirs in the whole fiver basin, which are mainly used for hydro-power generation, was investigated. While the effect of daily and weekly reservoirs on floods is negligible, annual reservoirs show a remarkable reducing influence for some sub-catchment areas. With an increasing return period of the floods this reducing effect decreases. In particular this is true for the downstream reaches of the fiver Alpenrhein, where the percentage of the river basin which is affected by annual reservoirs drops very much. Thus, in the risk assessment for the areas along these fiver reaches no reduction of extreme floods due to the reservoirs could be deduced.
