Discrepancies between analysed (a) and guaranteed (g) crude protein in Norwegian feed mixes were studied. There was an inverse (P<0.001) relationship between the ratio a/g and g CP (10-45%) in 3963 samples from 17 mills during 3.5 years. 2.12% of the samples had CP content outside the statutory range. 19% of these faulty samples had CP in excess, 81% were deficient. Fault frequency (fT) was regressed against g CP: fT = -3.55 + 0.36 X g CP (P=0.015). The total frequency of faults dropped from more than 3% to less than 1% during the surveyed period (P=0.034). There was no significant linear relationship between the frequency of faults and localization of the mills in six agricultural zones.
