Lange instrumentelle Klimazeitreihen für den Vernagtferner

Since the 1970s the Commission for Glaciology of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences focuses on glaciological work at the Vernagtferner in the central Alpine ?tztal. Part of it is the gauging station Vernagtbach (2640m a. s. 1.) which has produced not only runoff data but also systematic climatic measurements. To date they cover some four decades of climate time series in the direct vicinity of a glacier. On the other hand the HISTALP-dataset provides longer time series of more than two centuries for the Alps and their wider surroundings. The paper explains and discusses the creation and the potential of longterm compound climate series based on the shorter sample of local measurements and the longer regional series of HISTALP. Some examples of annual and seasonal climate series are discussed within the context of their potential for glaciological research.
