Low and declining enrollment of women in Canadian diagnostic radiology programs

As you know, women have outnumbered men in Canadian medical schools for almost a decade, with 57.5% of all participants in the 2012 Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS) being women [1]. However, women are historically underrepresented within the specialty of diagnostic radiology [2]. Recently, the proportion of practicing radiologists in Canada who are women has increased from 19.8% (364/1837) to 24.7% (493/1999) between 1998 and 2005 [3]. As of November 2012, within the province of Ontario, 27.3% (340/ 1243) of the active radiologists registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario are women.
