Yacht-builder Feadship Completes GTL Fuel Sea Trial

Yacht-builder and seaport venture Feadship recendy completed what the company states is the first sea trial of gas-to-liquids (GTL) synthetic diesel onboard a superyacht. "Feadship first heard about this new fuel system when we were designing the Aeon concept in 2009. Gas-to-liquids (GTL) synthetic diesel, developed by Shell, proved to be a highly suitable energy carrier for the combined reformer/fuel cell installation envisioned for the year- 2020. Unfortunately, GTL was not commercially viable at that time. In fact, Shell's large GTL facility in Qatar only started production in 2011, and pure GTL diesel fuel has only recently become available on the market. The Netherlands is a pioneer in this respect, and is leading the way with a worldwide introduction," according to a news release by Feadship.
