The CanMEDS resume: A useful educational portfolio tool for diagnostic radiology residents

Portfolios are collections of work, evaluations, and indicators of learner progress over time [5]. The conventional resident's file can be considered his or her comprehensive educational portfolio, because it contains the evaluations on rotations and standard objective examination results. Much of this content addresses evaluation of the Medical Expert Role. The CanMEDS resume serves as a repository of resident education and activities in all of the Roles. This tool highlights the importance of these physician competencies, while also modelling and reinforcing the professional and scholarly activity of lifelong learning. The document facilitates one-on-one discussions with the program director and identification of gaps in CanMEDS Role understanding as well as development of a more comprehensive personal learning plan. With the responsibility for updating and submission by the resident, this tool requires minimal effort to implement and maintain, yet provides many learner and program advantages.
