Alaska LNG files DOE export application

The Alaska South Central LNG project filed to export LNG with the DOE July 18. It asked for approval to send up to 20 mtpa for 30 years, beginning from either the date of the first shipment or 12 years from the DOE approval date, whichever comes first, to both free trade agreement (FTA) countries as well as non-FTA ones. Traditionally, the DOE has approved the former category relatively quickly, in a matter of weeks or months. The second designation generally requires more time. Of the many U.S. projects proposed, only seven have achieved non-FTA approval. The filing said that the Alaska South Central project expected to pre-file with the FERC later this year and was already gathering the necessary materials. It also argued that the Alaskan project was different than most others that had already applied because a provisional approval would help facilitate the approximately 858 miles of combined pipeline involved, although it was uncertain as to whether this additional dependent element would influence the DOE.
