U.K. report: Japanese nuclear restarts affect LNG

The U.K. Foreign & Commonwealth Office, supported by the Office of Trade and Investment, published a concise report on LNG imports and nuclear restarts in Japan. In addition to remarking on the changes being seen by a collaboration between Chubu Electric Power Co. and Tokyo Electric Power Co. for joint procurement of LNG, the report also said that granted and expected initial safety approvals could justify four to six nuclear power station restarts by next summer. Potentially, each restart displaces the demand for about 1 mtpa of LNG, although some of that displacement will have an effect on oil- rather than gas-fired plants. Additionally, each restart saves an estimated $750 million in annual LNG expenses.
