Santos: Carbon Tax Can't be Passed to Customers

Santos's CEO stated on Aug. 4 that the company would prefer an emissions trading regime to the proposed carbon tax and that costs could not be passed to LNG offtake customers. The statement was made in response to the Australian government's outlined plan to set a carbon price of US$24.70/tonne. The tax regime will be a fixed-price mechanism beginning in July 2012. It will increase by 2.5 percent a year until July 2015, when a trading scheme under which the price of carbon would be market-driven would be established.
