What Does Design and Innovation Mean for MSEs? A Case Study of Eight Brazilian Furniture Firms

Design and innovation themes have been discussed with different emphases by many authors (Bucolo and Mathews, 2010; MacCraw, 2006; Manzini and Vezzoli, 2002; Morelli, 2007; Owen, 2007; Swan, Newell, Scarbrough, and Hislop, 1999; Van de Ven, 1986; Verganti, 2008). Some approaches are systemic and involve the quality of the stakeholder's learning (Hall, 1995; Meroni, 2008); others relate innovation to a design process (Zhuang, Williamson, and Carter, 1999), to a way of thinking (Brown, 2008), or to technological or cultural factors.
