Distributed Design Management in a Large Public-Sector Organization: Methods, Routines, and Processes

When most people think of government, or of organizations like the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), they do not think "design." I recently attended a lecture at a local university and heard one of the students exclaim that she had heard the Commissioner of Tax talk about "codesign" and "collaboration/' She said that she found that idea completely amazing. It was interesting sitting there listening, because to me the fact that the ATO was engaging the community was an old piece of news, and the student's comment reminded me that it still comes as a surprise to many. This article intends to explore how this very large and complex organization could in fact be associated with design.
