Indium price to recover on Shaoguan accident

Indium price may recover soon after a long-period correction since September this year ahead of what people had predicted because of the closure of smelters in Shaoguan of Guangdong Province. Due to the recent soft demand, domestic producers forecast that indium price would not recover until May 2006. But now, the pollution accident in Shaoguan makes it possible for the price to climb up earlier than expected. The cadmium pollution caused by Shaoguan Smelter led to closure of the smelter, as well as another 14 smelters. Insiders estimate that these smelters have a combined l00tpy of indium capacity. 3 out of the 14 smelters do well in environmental protection, and like Shaoguan Smelter, they may resume their production in 2-3 months after rectification. And the other smelters will be shut down forever, or they will relocate their plants to other places, which will take at least half a year.
