The history of antibiotic use in livestock, calls for its reduction due to possible development of resistance and consumer demand for safe animal food products, regulations passed to minimize use of antibiotics in animal husbandry as well as the advantages and disadvantages of antibiotic use in animal husbandry are discussed. Emphasis is given on the reduction of antibiotic use in livestock and alternative measures for ensuring optimal animal health.
