Incidence of FIV- and FeLV-positive cats on Formentera

Plasma samples of 318 cats were tested for FIV-antibodies and FeLV-antigen during a castration/spaying programme on Formentera (Spain, Balearic Islands) during January and February 1997. Faeces samples of 42 cats were tested for salmonellae. FIV-antibodies were detected in 33 (10.4%) cats of which 23 were male and 10 female. All cats were negative for FeLV-antigen. Salmonellae were isolated from 2 faecal samples. Seropositive animals belonged in most cases to the age groups between 5 and 10 years.The most frequent findings in the FIV-positive animals were: gingivitis/stomatitis (8), dental problems (7), keratoconjunctivitis (5), parasitosis (5), dermatitis (4) or abscesses (3).
