Problematic nature of roughages and silages in the practice of horse feeding

Roughage and silage feeding to horses is discussed. Sufficient roughage is important: 0.5-1 kg per 100 kg body weight. Straw and hay should meet minimum quality standards. Baled silages can be preserved by drying or by ensilage. Compared with hay, bale silage may contain less crude fibre but more DE and digestible protein.
