Copper deficiency in milk cows in low moorland in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern [Germany].

Blood serum concentrations of copper, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and selenium were determined in 199 Pinzgauer cows and in 71 Simmental cows with a high incidence of uterine bleeding and losses of calves within the first 4 months of life. 115 blood samples from Pinzgauer cows and 98 blood samples from Simmental cows were analysed between 1994 and 1996. In addition blood samples were taken from the calves on 5 farms in 1996. Copper serum levels of Pinzgauer cows were between 5.20±2.96 and 8.78±2.71μmol/litre. Copper serum levels of Simmental cows were between 1.67±2.57 and 6.17±2.68μmol/litre. After copper supplementation in 1996, blood serum concentrations stabilized but still remained below physiological minimum of 12.6μmol/litre. After copper supplementation, copper serum levels were 13.09±1.99μmol/litre in Pinzgauer calves and 2.57±1.79μmol/litre in Simmental calves.
